SANSULA

Traditional African plucked instruments, or thumb pianos, this instrument originated in Africa where it is also called the mbira or likembe. Various kinds of thumb pianos have existed in Africa for thousands of years. The first thumb piano was a wood or bamboo-tined instrument that appeared on the west coast of Africa about 3000 years ago. In Shona music of Zimbabwe, the mbira dzavadzimu was called the voice of the ancestors.
